The camino that my partner Nedjo and I are starting in Málaga is much less walked than others we have been on, the Vía de la Plata and the Coastal Portuguese camino. The route we're doing is about 470 km and we'll spread it over about four weeks giving us some shorter days as we climb the hills outside Málaga as well as a break in Córdoba for some visiting time with family who are coming from Ireland.
Day 16: Córdoba to Cerro Muriano, Nov 28
A stellar day back on the camino for this next ten-day section that will take us to Mérida.
Day 17: Cerro Muriano – Villaharta, Nov 29
The rains returned on this day partly among oaks and partly on an old abandoned road next to the highway.
Day 18: Villaharta to Alcaracejos, Nov 30
Today we opted for a taxi for part of the day as we knew 34 kilometres was going to be too much—and it was the right decision.
Day 19: Alcaracejos to Hinojosa del Duque, Dec 1
Another fabulous albergue at the end of the day. And light-up to usher in December.
Day 20: Hinojosa del Duque to Monterubbio de la Serena, Dec 2
There were some trials but we made it through our 32 kilometre day.
Day 21: Monterubbio de la Serena to Castuera, Dec 3
A foggy morning gave way to a sweet Sunday spent on a paved – but very pastoral and scenic – road.
Day 22: Castuera to Campanario, Dec 4
A day of sheep and a disappointing place to sleep.
Day 23: Campanario to Don Benito, Dec 5
A long but magical day that included the archaeological site of La Mata and the stunning castle in Magacela.
Day 24: Medellin, Dec 6 rest day
A couple of dangerous sections and the challenges of buses on a holiday had us take an unexpected but lovely rest day in Medellin.
Day 25: Torrefresneda to Mérida, Dec 7
Our last day on the camino gave a little of everything as we walked into Mérida four weeks after leaving Málaga.
Post-camino: Mérida
A glimpse into the fabulous Roman city of Mérida where we spent a glorious four days post camino.
